چکیده

This paper presents some preliminary results of an ongoing research whose objective is to investigate the seismic behavior of intermediate beams (i.e., the beams other than those at the roof and foundation levels) in multi-story steel plate shear walls (SPSWs). Of primary interest is the determination of the strength level needed to avoid the formation of in-span plastic hinges, a relevant practical issue that has not been considered in past investigations. To attain this objective, the seismic response of different SPSW models was analyzed by performing linear and nonlinear analysis. The intermediate beams of the SPSW models were designed to resist: (I) forces imposed by gravity loads only; (II) forces determined by the ASCE 7 load combinations; and (III) forces imposed by fully yielded plates. For comparison purposes, SPSW models designed according to the Canadian Standard CAN/CSA S16-01 were considered as well. It is concluded that intermediate beams designed according to criteria I and II are prone to inspan plastic hinges and to excessive plastic deformations. It was also found that, while in-span plastic hinges do not appear in the intermediate beams of the CAN/CSA S16-01 models, they do appear in the roof and foundation beams of these models when a collapse mechanism develops.

Non-Linear Behavior and Shear Strength of Diagonally Stiffened Steel Plate Shear Walls

In this study, non-linear behavior of diagonally stiffened steel plate shear walls as a seismic resisting system has been investigated, and theoretical formulas for estimating shear strength capacity of the system have been proposed. Several validated analytical finite element models of steel shear walls with various stiffener dimensions are generated to verify and compare the analytical and th...

Seismic design of boundary frame members of steel plate shear walls

Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSWs), which consist of infill steel panels surrounded by columns, called Vertical Boundary Elements (VBEs), and beams, called Horizontal Boundary Elements (HBEs), are rapidly becoming an appealing alternative lateral force resisting system for building structures in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan and other countries. This paper presents results of so...

Capacity Design of Intermediate Horizontal Boundary Elements of Steel Plate Shear Walls

Consistent with capacity design principles and requirements of ductile behavior, the 2005 AISC and 2001 CSA seismic design codes require that the intermediate horizontal boundary elements HBEs of steel plate shear walls SPSWs be designed to remain essentially elastic with the exception of plastic hinges at their ends when the infill plates fully yield under seismic loading. However, the unexpec...

Corner Crack Effect on the Seismic Behavior of Steel Plate Shear Wall System

Although, experimental studies have reported fracture at the corner of Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSW), no study has been performed to investigate the crack effect, yet. Therefore, in this paper, the effect of crack at the corner of SPSWs on the seismic behavior of the system was investigated. Two probable cracks, that have been studies at the corner of SPSWs utilizing extended Finite Element me...
